Some of the easiest to use cloth diapering products are the all-in-one cloth diapers. These can work with a variety of different kinds of designs that can be fastened and adjusted as the baby grows.
If you are considering all-in-one (AIO) cloth diapers should think about the benefits and problems that can be associated with them. These can be used to determine whether or not this type of diaper will be useful in your home.
The first benefit is that these diapers are the cloth diapers that are the most like disposables. The only difference is that there is no need to dispose of them. AIOs can be fitted and adjusted in the same way as a disposable diaper. It is fitted to your child’s shape, just like a disposable. And, it fastens easily usually with Velcro or snaps – no need for pins or snappies to hold it together. Finally, the AIO diaper takes its name from the fact that the cover is included in the diaper, so there is no need for an extra step in your diapering process, and your baby will be well protected.
There are also some downsides though. The first problem is that all-in-one diapers often take more time to dry than other cloth diapers. The drying time will vary, depending on the fabric used, but because all the layers and cover are sewn together they will often not dry overnight.
Also, there are some cases where all-in-one cloth diapers might end up wearing out at more quickly than other cloth diapers, as generally the PUL fabric cover does not last as long as the absorbent fabric, particularly if it is dried in a clothes dryer. Of course, if you are crafty, you may be able to replace the PUL and extend the life of your diapers.
Additionally they are more expensive than many other cloth diapers, again due to having the cover included in the diaper – in most other diapering systems you will only need to purchase a few covers in each size, not one per diaper.
These are important things to consider when deciding on all in one cloth diapers. They are certainly the most convenient cloth diapers out there in terms of ease of use . However, if drying is an issue in your area, you will need quite a lot of them to be able to use them full time. For that reason many people mix and match, keeping a few AIOs on hand for when they need a quick diaper change (say, when you are out and about), with a selection of other diapers – be they simple flats or prefolds, or more expensive fitted cloth diapers or pocket diapers – to keep their costs down.
