Top 3 Bedding Items to Look for in Baby Bedroom Sets

Setting up a baby’s nursery is one of the most fun and rewarding experiences you can do if you are about to welcome a new baby into your life. Most stores and retailers have made it easier than ever to get everything exactly perfect. You can now find a myriad of baby bedroom sets and nursery decor all in one spot, so all you have to do is pick the items you want and everything is automatically coordinated. There are a few key pieces that you will want to make sure are included in your set, however. If you are planning on buying a bedding set, make sure they include at least these three items.

1. Comforter. A comforter for a baby’s crib is not exactly the same as a comforter for an adult bed. A baby’s comforter is lighter and much smaller. You will probably not even use a comforter until your baby grows a little bigger, but it is a good idea to make sure your set includes one. A comforter is the key piece that brings the whole decor of the room together.

2. Fitted Sheet. You will also want to make sure that there is a fitted sheet included in the set that you are looking at. You want the fitted sheet to be specifically for a crib so that it cannot move around and get tangled up with your baby while he or she is sleeping. The fitted sheet is also what will probably be showing most of the time, so it is nice if it matches the decor of the room and the rest of the set.

3. Bumper. Bumpers are a good thing to have included with the bedroom set. They are safety devices that make sleeping for your baby safer and more comfortable. Bumpers help keep your baby’s arms and legs in the crib and give them a soft place to rest their head against if they move around in their sleep. Bumpers go around the inside perimeter of the crib, so they will also be showing most of the time.

Most bedding sets for babies will have at least these three items in them. You will likely find that most sets will also include other decorating features and elements like wall hanging, lamps, rugs, curtains, additional blankets, and even mobiles and toys. It really depends on your budget and decorating style to determine what extra pieces and products you would like to include, but as long as these three elements are in your set, you should be prepared and ready to welcome your new addition.

From Cot To Bed – Two Effective Ways Of Managing Toddler Sleep Problems

When our toddler hit the 21 month mark she started to learn how she could climb out of her cot. We have a cot bed for her, which can be converted down to a child’s bed when appropriate. I knew it was time for the change when I found my daughter half way out with a leg over the highest end of the cot. The very next day she was having a nap and from downstairs we heard a loud thud followed by a lot of crying. So, out with the tools and the cot was no more.

The problem was that when we put our girl into her bed for the first night she hated it. She refused to lay in it and just would not settle. Having spent a few minutes comforting her by stroking her hair and singing a nursery rhyme or two I left her room again. Within seconds she was up and crying for me not to leave.  I went back and tried to settle her for a while and when she had dropped off to sleep I crept out. As I got to the door her radar went off, her head popped up and we were back to square one.

After a few days of endless crying, wailing and protesting we were at the end of our tether. We thought we could do this on our own but we were so wrong. We eventually called our health visitor and asked her how to get a toddler to sleep. A home visit was arranged and we got a list of questions together. What was making our situation worse was her new 3 month old baby sister, who needs our attention now too.

The Direct Approach – This approach is not for the faint hearted. It should take just 7 days or so and uses ‘planned ignoring’ to force your child to settle themselves. It is a difficult process but worth it in the end as you will see from our results. To use the direct approach you put your child to bed after their bedtime routine. Say to them something similar to the following: “Stay in bed, do not get out of bed. Do not call out or cry; if you do I will not come back. If you sleep in your bed all night you will get a surprise in the morning.”  Say goodnight then leave right away and do not return, no matter how much your child protests and cries.

See what I mean about being difficult? It tugs at your heart strings to leave them like that but it’s a kind of tough love thing. For the first few days they may cry for some time, even hours. As the days go by your child should begin to cry less and less; they may even take themselves back to bed (if they are like my little girl and fell asleep at the door every night).

The Gentle Approach – This approach is a little more kind. Having gone through the bedtime routine you settle your child in bed, say the same things to them about staying in bed and being good. Then, after they have cried for 2 minutes you may return to settle them again. Stay for just 1 minute then leave. If they cry you may return after 4 minutes, stay for a minute then leave. Each time you double the length of time you leave them before returning.

This approach is probably better suited to parents who may feel uncomfortable leaving their child in such circumstances. It also takes a little longer than the direct approach; around 10 – 14 days.

The Results – As I said earlier, our daughter was probably affected by the introduction of her baby sister so it took us a little longer to crack this. It took around 10 or 12 days but what we have now is fantastic! The first few nights involved our daughter holding a vigil at the baby gate to her room, crying, calling out and so on. This continued one night from 7:00pm until gone 01:00am. When she eventually fell asleep at the door we were able to pick her up and put her in bed until morning.

Gradually she would cry for less time each night but still sit at the door until she fell asleep. One night it just happened. I put her to bed with her favourite cuddly dog, gave the dog a kiss, gave her a kiss and asked her to settle her dog. She gave him a kiss and just laid there. I walked out, closed her door and the next we knew it was 07:20am and she was awake.

There is no doubt that these methods both work; one takes less time, the other is little kinder. However, remember one thing – you are not alone. Most parents go through this at some point but will no doubt be tearing their hair out at first. Preparing Your Home and Family for a New Baby

The months before the arrival of a new baby are both exciting and busy. Parents have many preparations to make. The following is a list of things to do before the baby travels home.

1. Get siblings used to the idea of a new brother or sister. Early in the pregnancy, it is important for parents to tell their other children about the baby. Siblings need time to ask questions about the new baby and figure out how it will affect them. In addition, if parents allow siblings to help in the preparations, they will feel more included in the process.

2. Send out a baby announcement to friends and relatives. Parents often want to share the joy they feel about the baby with their loved ones. Furthermore, a baby announcement gives relatives and friends who live far away an opportunity to congratulate the parents and perhaps send a gift.

3. Purchase furniture for the nursery. If parents have other children they may not need a whole new set of baby furniture. However, if this is their first child they will need a crib and a changing table. Other appealing pieces of furniture include a rocking chair, bookshelves, and a dresser for baby clothing. Certainly, parents should determine what furniture they need for the nursery, make a list, and then begin searching.

4. Purchase clothing and diapers. In many cases, friends or family will host a baby shower for the mother-to-be. At the shower, she will likely receive a lot of the necessary clothing items for her baby. Before the baby arrives, parents should make sure they have the proper baby clothing for the season. For instance, if the baby is born in the winter, then a sweater or appropriate coat is necessary. Making a list of items is very helpful for anxious parents who don’t want to forget anything. Especially diapers!

5. Purchase a car seat for the baby. This is an important step for parents to remember because they will need it when leaving the hospital with their new baby. It’s helpful for parents to begin shopping early so they can have an idea of their options as well as make sure it is properly installed in their car. Also, it’s a good idea for parents to become familiar with using the car seat so that when the baby arrives they’ll feel comfortable with how the seat works.

6 Fun Yet Cheap Gift Ideas for Kids

When my best friend had a little girl I finally had a kid in my life to buy presents for. Fast forward a couple of years, and now that same best friend has 4 kids, thus giving me 4 times the opportunity to pretend I’m an uncle and spoil them. But I’ve learned something interesting when buying kids presents. First of all, the idea of spending a lot of money makes no sense. A gift that costs $100 but isn’t fun or related to what the kid likes is completely worthless, whereas a gift with their favorite cartoon on it is automatically awesome.

Kids love fun gifts and interact gifts – stuff they can play with, or at least something that makes noise and gets some attention. Here’s a look at 6 things I think are fun but also rather inexpensive to buy the little ones for birthdays or the holidays.

Bacon Bandaids

I saw these at the Lighter Image shop at the mall and couldn’t resist. Bacon bandaids? Ridiculous for sure. But funny too. And way cooler than that ugly brown band aid your Mom gave you when you were a kid. Just don’t try to eat it, as it’s not real bacon. This works better on kids who are obviously old enough to understand the joke! A toddler probably won’t think it’s too funny.

Branded Alarm Clocks

I always hated waking up to an alarm clock growing up, but maybe it wouldn’t been different if I had a Muppet Babies alarm clock! Kids alarm clocks are made now for just about every TV show around, so you can find whatever he or she likes the most and get it for them with a clock on it. Very cool.

Candy – and Lots of It

Health issues aside, do you remember what it was like to suddenly be the sole owner of mountains of candy as a child? Usually this only happened on Halloween, but then again I do recall that rare relative that would make me the happiest kid around – and the most popular kid at school, albiet temporarily – by gifting me bags of delicious, sugar filled candy. It was good then and it’s good now. If you’re short on cash, buying a whole bunch of candy and putting it together nicely is a super cheap way to have an awesome present.

Stickers

Next time your at the Dollar Star, check out all the books of stickers you can buy for almost nothing in the toy aisle. I don’t think there’s a kid on this planet who doesn’t like stickers, and lucky for them, because we can buy them by the hundreds for just a couple of dollars. Bonus: get them stickers of their favorite show and they’ll like you for it.

Fireworks

My god, I’m kidding. Don’t ever buy them fireworks, okay? Just seeing if you’re paying attention. Next!

Crayons and Coloring Books

Kids love to color. Little do they know that a coloring book might only cost 99 cents. As much as video games, cell phones, and other gadgets have revolutionized (or ruined) toys for kids, thankfully things like coloring in pictures of rabbits or cartoons appears to be embedded in our DNA, and kids still love to do it.

I’m sure I’ve left out some of your favorite cheap kids gift ideas. Feel free to add them via the blog comments feature Below. Thanks!

Choosing A Nursing Chair

Parents of newborn babies and older infants spend a lot of their time sitting for feeding, holding, comforting and preparing him or her for sleep. While using the sofa or chair can serve this purpose, most parents prefer to use a nursing chair or glider. Able to emulate a rocking motion, this product is safer and studier than rockers of the past. And it is extremely comfortable for parents and infants especially when paired with an ottoman – which can provide relief for everyone. (Especially when dealing with a fussy baby!)

Click HERE for some great deals I have found for nursing chairs.

Available in a wide range of prices, expect to pay around $150 to $300 for a quality nursing rocking chair. This may seem expensive at first, especially compared to traditional rockers. However, gliding rockers can offer a wide variety of features that can not be offered by the latter. They are padded from top to bottom, making them comfortable to sit on and rest your back – which can be a lifesaver if your infant is experiencing a sleepless night or isn’t feeling well. Also, depending on the brand there may be other features available such as ottomans and the ability to recline. Not sure where to start? Stork Craft, Shermag and Dutailier offer a wide selection when it comes to choices and prices.

Once you determine your budget, how do you know you have found the best nursing chair available? There are several features to look for, including cleanable fabric, quiet gliding motion, ottoman (perfect for new mothers dealing with sore feet and swollen ankles), padded arms and ability to coordinate with the nursery or any other room in the house. Most of these features need little explanation, because they are related to the parents comfort and ease of care. However, parents may wonder why the right color selection is important. Chances are you will use your new glider for longer than your child’s infant stage. In many cases it will be used well into their toddler years. Because it is used longer than the typical baby product, it will need to transition easily from nursery, toddler room and general room in the house. Instead of choosing traditional baby colors such as blue or pink, opt for a white nursing chair instead. This neutral color can easily transition into any style, color theme or décor – making it more versatile than other options.

The right nursing chair will not only last through the newborn and infant stages of your child’s life, but will be a timeless piece for your home as they grow. Eventually, this will not only be a practical piece of furniture for parents, but one where memories are created and remain through all the laughter and sleepless nights.

Nappy Bags; Why Not Go Trendy?

The nappy bags (also known as baby changing bags) of today are more stylish than those designed only several years ago. However many parents may ignore some trendy, chic totes and choose something more traditional. But are parents missing out when they choose price over style?

The most popular designer names for baby products today are OiOi, Timi & Leslie, Coach, Mia Belle and Skip Hop. Most parents or soon-to-be parents recognize these names even if they do not know anything about fashion or style trends. But there is a reason these names are well-known. The baby nappy bags produced by these companies not only carry the association with the retailer’s name, and celebrity fashion but are connected with high quality merchandise. In other words, parents may wonder if cheap diaper totes will endure normal wear and tear – but they will never need to worry if you purchase a more expensive, brand name product. And because many of these brands cater to parents and babies, they are not only fashionable but extremely functional.

Designer nappy bags are often overlooked because parents associate this baby product with a high price tag. Brand names cost between $100 to $200 or more depending on the designer and material. And with cheap diaper bags costing as little as $30, parents may wonder why they should pay more. The reason is simple. Available in a wide range of materials from durable fabric to leather, these products do not look like nappy bags at all. In many cases they can be mistaken for a casual tote or oversized bag. Because of this, these styles are more appealing to men and women – especially if they don’t like the baby themed look of less expensive products.

Check out Amazons full range of Nappy and Diaper bags HERE

Created with an appealing look, designer baby nappy changing bags have an amazing ability to serve multiple purposes. Their fashionable style allows them to resemble everything from an oversized purse to a tote. Which means parents can use this product during the newborn to toddler stage (and maybe beyond!) During the infant years, this nappy bag can be used for its traditional purpose – holding everything from diapers and lotions to baby bottles. As a toddler, it can hold everything from toys to a change in clothes, making life on-the-go a little bit easier. And no one will ever know this bag is the same one used from the day your child was born.

These brand name diaper bags are not only for the rich or celebrities anymore. The cost of some of these products may surprise you – especially if you are able to catch them on sale. Also, they are more durable and able to multi-purpose as your child grows.

Modern Cloth Diapering: Using All-in-One Cloth Diapers

Some of the easiest to use cloth diapering products are the all-in-one cloth diapers. These can work with a variety of different kinds of designs that can be fastened and adjusted as the baby grows.

If you are considering all-in-one (AIO) cloth diapers should think about the benefits and problems that can be associated with them. These can be used to determine whether or not this type of diaper will be useful in your home.

The first benefit is that these diapers are the cloth diapers that are the most like disposables. The only difference is that there is no need to dispose of them. AIOs can be fitted and adjusted in the same way as a disposable diaper. It is fitted to your child’s shape, just like a disposable. And, it fastens easily usually with Velcro or snaps – no need for pins or snappies to hold it together. Finally, the AIO diaper takes its name from the fact that the cover is included in the diaper, so there is no need for an extra step in your diapering process, and your baby will be well protected.

There are also some downsides though. The first problem is that all-in-one diapers often take more time to dry than other cloth diapers. The drying time will vary, depending on the fabric used, but because all the layers and cover are sewn together they will often not dry overnight.

Also, there are some cases where all-in-one cloth diapers might end up wearing out at more quickly than other cloth diapers, as generally the PUL fabric cover does not last as long as the absorbent fabric, particularly if it is dried in a clothes dryer. Of course, if you are crafty, you may be able to replace the PUL and extend the life of your diapers.

Additionally they are more expensive than many other cloth diapers, again due to having the cover included in the diaper – in most other diapering systems you will only need to purchase a few covers in each size, not one per diaper.

These are important things to consider when deciding on all in one cloth diapers. They are certainly the most convenient cloth diapers out there in terms of ease of use . However, if drying is an issue in your area, you will need quite a lot of them to be able to use them full time. For that reason many people mix and match, keeping a few AIOs on hand for when they need a quick diaper change (say, when you are out and about), with a selection of other diapers – be they simple flats or prefolds, or more expensive fitted cloth diapers or pocket diapers – to keep their costs down.

Eco Nappies; Great For Your Baby And The Earth

Organic, natural baby products are appealing to environmentally conscientious parents – and there are few items as likable as eco nappies. But did you know that using these diapers is not only good for the planet; it is good for your baby too?

Many newborns and older infants deal with allergies that are more severe than past generations. And these sensitivities can be aggravated by certain materials, dyes and perfumes used in the manufacturing of disposables. If you a parent who is worried about this issue, or are a parent who is facing these problems today there is an easy solution. Switching to eco friendly nappies will limit your infant’s exposure to allergens and provide permanent relief if allergies are already being experienced. Made from materials such as cotton, hemp, bamboo and microfiber, these fibers are less irritating than their disposable counterpart. But did you know there are other advantages as well? Using eco nappies can ease the pains for infants (and parents) caused by diaper rash because these materials are breathable, allowing air to circulate – even through a wet diaper.

Little Jeff loves sleeping in his Eco nappy

Cloth diapers are ideal for everyday use at home, but you may be wondering if there is an environmentally friendly option available for parents who travel frequently. Eco disposable nappies are not the perfect solution – but they are better than the alternative. Made by manufacturers such as Seventh Generation, Bamboo Nature and Nature Babycare, these diapers are created without specific chemicals and other irritants such as bleach and chlorine. Also, these disposables are perfume free, which is ideal for infants who are particularly sensitive to chemicals. Also, these eco friendly disposable nappies are made from biodegradable materials such as wood pulp and lack the plastics and gels that are hard on the environment.

One of the reasons parents prefer disposable diapers is because they are absorbent and leaks are rare. But did you know this feature can also unintentional discourage potty training? Because a child can not feel the wetness on the diaper surface, they will not associate it with the feeling of having to go to the bathroom. Eco nappies for babies make your infant more aware, and accelerate and encourage potty training, without encouraging problems such as diaper rash. And what parent wouldn’t want to make potty training easier for their child? (Or for themselves?)

Even though all of the advantages of using eco nappies may not be obvious at first glance, parents may want to consider them before using traditional disposable diapers. Not only are they good for the planet, but the discourage problems such as diaper rash and allergies – and encourage potty training. Depending on your situation environmentally friendly cloth diapers or eco disposable nappies can offer the perfect solution.

Choosing A Diaper Changing Station

Purchasing a diaper changing table can make basic tasks easier for parents, by keeping all of your baby products immediately on hand. In the past, the only choice available was a dressing table design. But today parents have a wide variety of options to choose from – including traditional, portable and wall mounted styles.

The addition of traditional baby diaper changing station can improve the organization and function of any nursery. Basic models sold by manufacturers such as DiVinici and Graco cost approximately $100, and offer an affordable solution for any budget. However, these cheap changing stations come with distinct disadvantages. Many are built with open shelves, which may make it harder to keep this space organized. But, these openings can allow curious hands to get into trouble! These units will require parents to keep vigilant eyes on their child once they are able to explore their environment to keep them safe and secure.

Check out these great diaper changing stations

Installing a wall mounted diaper changing station is a simple way to deal with the limited space in small rooms or apartments. Able to fold out when needed, they are compact and practical but have two distinct disadvantages. The first is lack of storage, but this can be remedied by keeping a dresser or other piece of furniture nearby. The other issue is cost and availability. Starting at $400 these models are more expensive, hard to find and don’t offer a way for parents to repurpose them once the infant has grown. Looking for a baby changing products with a bit more appeal? Consider alternative ideas such as corner baby tables that are compact, perfect for small spaces and offer storage for all your baby products and needs.

Traveling with a child is a necessity for most parents, and having everything your baby needs on hand is essential. A portable diaper changing station is the perfect solution if you do not want to use a diaper bag, or need to expand on the size of your existing product. Also, they are ideal for home use – especially if do not have room for a traditional changing table or limited storage space. These kits contain a number of pockets, are able to hold 15 diapers or more and contain a changing mat. The disadvantage of portable changing stations can be found in their construction. Most are based on a caddy style design, which leaves products vulnerable to falling out if the bag is tipped over. However, they are an extremely affordable solution with most products starting at around $30.

The diaper changing stations of today are significantly more versatile than those of the past, and make daily tasks easier and more organized. Parents will be able to find the perfect solution in one of the three styles mentioned above depending on their budget and personal needs.
